What is Dyslexia?

It's more than a score...

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that affects how a child develops reading and spelling skills. Children with dyslexia may find it harder to read words accurately or fluently, remember spelling patterns, or spell words consistently, even when they have received appropriate teaching and support.

Dyslexia can affect children in different ways and to varying degrees. Some children find it difficult to recognise the sounds within words or remember the links between letters and sounds. Others may struggle to read fluently, recall spellings or develop automaticity in their literacy skills. These difficulties can occur even when a child has good understanding, strong reasoning skills or abilities in other areas.

When assessing for dyslexia, I look beyond reading and spelling scores alone. I explore how a child processes sounds within words, remembers verbal information, learns spelling patterns and develops reading fluency. I also consider their educational history, progress in response to teaching, and wider learning profile to build a clear picture of their individual strengths and difficulties.

My aim is to understand how your child learns, identify any underlying barriers to literacy development and provide practical, tailored recommendations to help them make progress and reach their potential.
